Codex® Lactic Ferments: Price, Dosage and Side Effects
Codex® is a drug produced and distributed in Italy by the pharmaceutical company Zambon Italia Srl. It works thanks to the presence of strains of Saccharomyceti boulardii , which is typically used in the treatment of diarrheal syndromes and intestinal dysmicrobism.
The active ingredient of the Codex® drug is a type of yeast of a selected species called Saccharomyces boulardii which by nature is resistant to antibiotics, therefore the action of this drug remains unchanged even during antibiotic therapy.
Pharmaceutical forms present on the market
The pharmaceutical forms of Codex® currently authorized in Italy are as follows:
- Codex® 250 mg tablets in packs of 20 tablets in blister or bottle;
- Codex® tablets 250 mg in packs of 10 tablets in blister or bottle;
- Codex® 250 mg in boxes of 10 or 20 sachets.
How much?
Codex® is a class C drug, therefore the cost is borne entirely by the citizen. It does not require a prescription for purchase since it is a simple over-the-counter drug. The price of each formulation is:
- €10.90 for tablets and sachets in packs of 10;
- 17.50 euros for tablets and sachets in packs of 20.
How does it work?
Codex® is a drug that belongs to the family of antidiarrheal microorganisms. Its constituents are resistant to antibiotics and have an activity that stimulates the defense mechanisms against infections and the increase in the activity of the enzymes of the intestinal mucosa.
It helps recover the health of the saprophytic flora, it is useful in the treatment of viral diarrhea and thanks to its tolerability it can also be taken by infants and elderly patients as well as pregnant and breastfeeding patients. The bacteria are resistant to the acidic environment of the stomach and arrive intact in the intestine where they carry out their action.
Posology and Method of Use
You must follow the dosage below or that recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. In adults: 1 or 2 capsules twice a day unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor.
It is recommended to take Codex® at regular intervals on an empty stomach or about a quarter of an hour before meals. Efficacy is not compromised by the simultaneous intake of a therapy
If the patient is following antibiotic therapy, it is recommended to take Codex® at the same time as these.
Overdose
The effects of an overdose are not known, but in case of accidental excessive intake of the drug it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
For the use of Codex® during pregnancy and lactation, refer to the indications of the doctor or pharmacist. There are currently no known particular dangerous conditions due to the use of Codex® during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but it is still advisable to consult your doctor.
It is advisable not to take any medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding, including over-the-counter medicines without a prescription, without first seeking the advice of your doctor.
Contraindications
The use of Codex® is contraindicated in the case of overt hypersensitivity to Saccharomyces boulardii or to any of the excipients present in the drug.
The excipients contained in the drug are as follows: lactose, gelatin, titanium dioxide and magnesium stearate. The drug contains lactose and could cause discomfort to intolerant patients.
The drug is contraindicated in patients with central venous catheters. No further contraindications are currently known, but for any doubts about the drug and any contraindications, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
Interactions with other drugs
The drug Codex® should not be taken during topical antifungal therapy or during systemic therapy. No other interactions are known , but you are advised to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have recently taken, are taking or are about to take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Side effects
Like any type of drug, Codex® can also cause serious side effects , even if not everyone has them. Rare cases of flatulence, edema and allergic reactions, urticaria, itching and skin rash have been reported following the administration of Codex®.
Carefully following the instructions contained in the package leaflet minimizes the risk of suffering undesirable effects. If the patient notices side effects not listed on the package leaflet, he should contact the doctor or pharmacist who will report the hitherto unknown effects to the Italian Medicines Agency AIFA.
It is advisable not to take the drug after the expiry date which can be read on the package. The expiry date refers to a correctly stored drug.
