Luan® Gel and Ointment: Indications, Dosage and Price

Luan® is a medicine produced and distributed in Italy by the pharmaceutical company Molteni & CFlli Alitti Spa, which owes its action to lidocaine hydrochloride , an active ingredient which is specifically indicated to facilitate endourethral maneuvers such as, for example, the introduction of catheters, cystoscopies, dilations . It has both a lubricating and anesthetic action.

It is also used for esophagoscopic intubations and as curative anesthesia, tracheo-bronchoscopies, pharyngoscopy, gastroscopies and rectoscopies and in all endoscopic examinations of an exploratory and/or curative nature.

The product has a lubricating and anesthetic action and for this reason it allows to avoid the reflections of the mucous membranes with which the instruments come into contact in the endoscopic maneuvers the spastic reactions.

Pharmaceutical forms present on the market

The following forms of the drug Luan® are commercially available in our country:

  • Luan® 2,5%, gel in flacone da 15 g;
  • Luan® 1% gel in flacone da 100 g.

This drug can be purchased without the need for a prescription and the price to purchase it is as follows:

  • Luan® 2.5% gel in 15 g bottle: 6.13 euros;
  • Luan® 1% gel in 100 g bottle: 8.55 euros.

How does it work?

Luan® is a medicine that belongs to the category of local anesthetics. Lidocaine is metabolised by the liver and eliminated by the kidney. The plasma half-life is approximately 100 minutes.

Posology and Method of Use

The use of the drug is very simple because it is sufficient to push the ointment by squeezing the tube, massage the area and then perform the necessary endourethral manoeuvres. The drug should be used with caution in subjects with damaged mucous membranes and/or sepsis in the area on which the drug must be applied.

Establishing the right dosage is quite complex and must be controlled by a doctor. Patients suffering from renal insufficiency and in patients suffering from liver insufficiency should seek medical attention. Do not take any medication if you suffer from liver or kidney failure without first consulting your doctor.

Overdose

Studies have been carried out for an overdose of Luan® . Symptoms of an overdose are: convulsions, tremors and depression, coma, respiratory failure, hypotension and bradycardia.

Treatment of overdose is symptomatic. Seizures can be treated with the administration of barbiturates or benzodiazepines.

Can it be used during pregnancy?

Can Luan® be taken during pregnancy? No damage to the fetus or mother has been reported during pregnancy, but the drug should be used with caution in breastfeeding women.

Although the drug is not contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is still advisable not to take drugs during pregnancy, including over-the-counter drugs, without first consulting your doctor.

What are the contraindications?

The use of Luan® is contraindicated in the case of overt hypersensitivity to lidocaine hydrochloride or to any of the excipients present in the drug. The excipients contained in the drug are: carmellose sodium, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, glycerol, ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium benzoate, purified water and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate.

No other contraindications are currently known. For any doubts on the use of Luan® and on any contraindications, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Interaction with other drugs

Propranolol may prolong the plasma half-life of lidocaine. Cimetidine may increase the plasma levels of lidocaine. There are currently no known interactions with other drugs.

Side effects

Hypersensitivity reactions such as pain, itching and burning may occur. Hypersensitivity reactions can go as far as anaphylactic shock, but are extremely rare. There are currently no known other side effects to report.

If the patient should notice side effects not yet known and not listed on the leaflet, he must notify the doctor or pharmacist who will take care of reporting the hitherto unknown side effects to the Italian Medicines Agency AIFA.

Do not use the medicine after the expiry date  which can be read on the package. The expiry date refers to the product stored correctly.

Medicines that have expired or are no longer used must not be thrown away with the garbage, but must be disposed of correctly and following the indications of the law. Ask your pharmacist about how to dispose of expired medicines.

It is also advisable to store the drug in the original packaging and to keep it away from sources of light and/or direct heat sources. Do not use the drug if the packaging appears to have been tampered with and/or damaged or if the product’s appearance has changed.
