NeoBorocillina® Lozenges for the Throat: Review and Indications

NeoBorocillina®  is a pharmaceutical product marketed by the Alfasigma Spa company which contains two active ingredients, benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate, which are used to counteract inflammation of the throat and mouth.

You can buy them freely at the pharmacy and they are very convenient because they are sold in practical dissolve-in-your-mouth tablets that you can always carry with you.

Formats available

NeoBorocillina® formats are authorized for sale in Italy by the Ministry of Health. This product is available in mint flavor with or without sugar.

Furthermore, a version with added vitamin C is also available. In the pharmacy you will surely find the format that best suits your needs.

How does it work?

NeoBorocillina® is a drug classified among the antiseptics of the oropharynx and can be useful for treating an inflammation of the throat caused by cold snaps or by small particles that accidentally come into contact with our body.

The drug contains sodium benzoate which has a mild antiseptic, alkalizing and mucolytic action.

Benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate, the active ingredients of NeoBorocillina®, are used as mild antiseptics that can affect our oral cavity.

This drug, it should be noted, should not be used to treat serious bacterial infections that require a medical examination and the prescription of antibiotics.

How is it assumed?

As regards methods and quantities of intake, it is necessary to follow the instructions of the doctor, pharmacist or the package leaflet.

For tablets , dissolve one tablet in the mouth every 2 or 3 hours up to a maximum dose of 8 administrations per day. The tablets should be dissolved in the mouth slowly to maintain the effect of the active ingredients for as long as possible.

In the presence of renal insufficiency and for patients suffering from hepatic insufficiency, no particular precautions are indicated to be taken, but it is still advisable to seek the advice of the doctor before taking any drug, including those without a prescription.

Overdose

There are not enough studies on a possible overdose , but in case of excessive use of the drug it is advisable to contact your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately.

Can it be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

There are not enough studies regarding the use of benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate during pregnancy and lactation. For this reason it is advisable to consult your doctor before taking any medication, including over-the-counter and non-prescription medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Are there any contraindications?

The use of the drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to benzyl alcohol and/or sodium benzoate or to drugs belonging to the same pharmaceutical category. Its use is also not recommended in the case of hypersensitivity to the excipients present in the drug.

The other ingredients of the drug are magnesium stearate, menthol, mint essence, precipitated silica, eucalyptol, sucrose and citral. The lozenges are contraindicated in children under two years of age, especially if with a predisposition to laryngospasm and/or with a predisposition to seizures.

There are currently no other contraindications to report. For any doubts about the drug and its possible contraindications, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Interactions with other drugs

It is advisable to avoid the simultaneous use of other antiseptic drugs. For the rest there are no other interactions to report with other drugs. Although other interactions are not known at the moment, it is still advisable to consult your doctor if you have taken, are taking or will need to take other drugs during Neo Borocillina® therapy .

Side effects

Like all drugs, NeoBorocillina® can also have side effects even if not all people experience the same symptoms. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions, respiratory insufficiency, glottis oedema, dizziness, vomiting, sweating, arm oedema, malaise, perioral oedema, face oedema, urticaria, eyelid oedema, haemolytic anemia and jaundice may be reported.

Sodium benzoate can irritate skin and mucous membranes. Paying attention to the instructions in the package leaflet minimizes the risk of being affected by undesirable effects.

If any of the side effects gets serious, inform your doctor. If the patient should notice even a single side effect not indicated in the leaflet, he must notify the doctor or pharmacist who will take care of reporting to the Italian Medicines Agency the hitherto unknown side effects.

Do not use the product after the expiry date  which can be found on the medicine packaging. The expiry date refers to the medicinal product stored correctly and in the original package.

It is advisable to keep the medicine away from direct light and/or heat sources. Do not use the drug if the packaging appears to have been tampered with and/or damaged or if the appearance of the product appears to have changed.

Do you need the recipe?

No, a prescription is not required to buy NeoBorocillina® and you can buy the product directly at the pharmacy by paying the full amount as reimbursement by the NHS is not foreseen.

The average price is around 7-8 euros but it is possible to find it on offer at certain times of the year.

Neo Borocillina® is classified as a class C drug so it is paid by the citizen and is not reimbursed by the Health Service of our country. The medicine does not require a prescription for purchase since it is a simple over-the-counter drug. At the moment there are no AIFA notes to report associated with the drug NeoBorocillina® .
