Preparation H® for Hemorrhoids: Price, Indications and Use

Preparation H® is a medicinal product distributed in Italy by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Italia Srl. Its active ingredient, brewer’s yeast, is used in the treatment of external hemorrhoids and uncomplicated internal hemorrhoids and for the treatment of anal fissures.

It is available in two convenient pharmaceutical forms: ointment and suppositories.

How does it work?

Preparation H® belongs to the category of drugs for the therapy against uncomplicated external and internal hemorrhoids and for the treatment of anal fissures.

Preparation H® is a medicine that acts thanks to the presence of brewer’s yeast and restores damaged tissues by increasing the speed of oxygen consumption at the tissue level and speeding up the overcoming of the pathology.

The absorption of the drug is small and is well tolerated by the body.

Posology and Method of Use

For the medicine it is recommended to follow the following dosage.

For the ointment : apply up to 2-3 times a day and when possible also after each evacuation. For rectal use, screw the dispenser onto the tube, lubricate it with a little product before inserting it. Squeeze until applicator is full and insert into rectum. Press again to add enough medication. Spread the ointment also on the outside. Clean the applicator after use and replace the cap.

For suppositories : remove the protection and introduce the suppository into the rectum up to 2-3 times a day and when possible also after each evacuation.

Patients suffering from renal insufficiency and patients suffering from hepatic insufficiency need not take any special precautions because the product is safe.

Overdose

To date, no symptoms related to an overdose of the drug have been identified. Carefully following the directions of your doctor, pharmacist and package leaflet greatly reduces the risk of an overdose. In case of doubts about a possible overdose of the drug, it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Can it be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

With regard to the possibilities of using Preparation H® during pregnancy and breastfeeding, you should always seek the advice of your doctor. There are no contraindications on the use of the drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding, especially if the drug is used according to a doctor’s prescription or following the instructions given in the package leaflet.

Although it is not contraindicated, it is still advisable to contact your doctor first. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, no medicines of any kind should be taken without first seeking medical advice. Even supplements or nonprescription drugs that might seem harmless can cause harm to a fetus or infant.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, medicines should be taken only in case of real need and only with the doctor’s consent.

Contraindications

The use of the drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to brewer’s yeast or to the excipients contained in Preparation H®. The excipients of the drug are:

  • In the ointment : shark liver oil, light mineral oil, white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin, wool wax, anhydrous lanolin, petroleum jelly, ozokerite, butylated hydroxytoluene, lanolin, methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, glycerol, propyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, red thyme oil;
  • In suppositories : shark liver oil, cocoa butter, parawax, Witepsol W35, polyethylene glycol dilaurate 600, glycerol;

Following a short period of treatment without noticing appreciable results, it is advisable to consult your doctor. The use, especially if for a prolonged period of time, of products for topical use could give rise to sensitization phenomena.

In case of bleeding or if the problem persists, it is advisable to consult your doctor. The ointment contains lanolin which may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis.

The ointment contains butylated hydroxytoluene which could cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis or irritation of the mucous membranes or eyes. The ointment also contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate which may cause allergic-type reactions.

Interaction with other drugs

There are currently no known interactions of the various Preparation H® formulas with other drugs. However, we recommend that you ask your doctor for information if you have taken, should take or are taking any other medicines together with Preparation H®.

Side effects

There are currently no known side effects related to the use of Preparation H® drug  . If the patient should notice any side effects not listed on the leaflet, he must contact the doctor or pharmacist to report them to the Italian Medicines Agency using the appropriate form.
