Recall for the vaccinated Johnson & Johnson: when and to whom

Those vaccinated with the Johnson& Johnson single-dose vaccinewill be able to receive thesecond booster dose, as established by AIFA today. How can I receive the additional dose? And what COVID vaccines will be used to vaccinate those who have already received the Janssen vaccine?

Let’s look at all these aspects in the following paragraphs. To stay up to date on this topic, please consult the official website of AIFAand theMinistry of Health.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine: who can receive the second dose

The second dose for those vaccinated with theJanssen vaccinewill be administered6 months after the first, in a similar way to what has already been decided for those vaccinated with the other three vaccines authorized in Italy. Please note that in Italy this vaccine is authorized for administration from theage of 18, although the Ministry of Health has recommended its preferential use on subjects with at least 60 years of age.

According toAIFA statisticsconcerning the vaccination campaign, in Italy there would be about1.49 millionsubjects immunized thanks to this vaccine. In percentage terms, this is2.52% of the vaccinated population. It will be up to the regions to determine how booster doses will be administered for those vaccinated with Janssen.

What vaccines will be used for the second dose?

According to official AIFA sources, the Johnson & Johnson Janssen vaccine will not be used for the second administration, but one of the twomRNA vaccinesauthorized in the EU. As a result, it is a heterologous vaccination withComirnaty by Pfizer-BioNTechorSpikeVax by Moderna.

AIFA has therefore not followed the example of the USFDA, which a few days ago authorized the use of the Janssen vaccine for booster dosefrom the age of 18. In the USA, the FDA had already expressed a positive opinion towards heterologous vaccination with the Comirnaty or SpikeVax vaccines.
