Tetramil® Eye drops: Price, Indications and Dosage

Tetramil® is an antihistamine eye drop marketed in our country by the pharmaceutical company Teofarma Srl. It works thanks to the combination of two active ingredients tetrizoline and pheniramine which is used to treat the following pathologies:

  • Allergies and inflammation of the conjunctiva;
  • Allergies and inflammation of the conjunctiva with sensitivity to light, sensation of a foreign body in the eye, excessive tearing and pain.

How much?

The following pharmaceutical forms are authorized for marketing in Italy:

  • Tetramil® 0.3+0.05% in a 10 mL bottle at a price of 8.81 euros;
  • Tetramil® 0.3+0.05% in single-dose vials in packs of 10 of 0.5 mL at a cost of 10.13 euros.

How does it work?

The drug Tetramil® acts through two specific actions: decongestant and antihistamine. Tetryzoline and pheniramine are the active ingredients which perform two different actions on the eye. The first is a vasoconstrictor that aims to reduce the inflammation and edema present, while the second is an antihistamine that works by blocking the histamine H1 receptors.

Dosage: how is it used?

As far as the dosage is concerned, it is necessary to comply with the following as well as with the information provided by the doctor or contained in the package leaflet. Instill in the eye affected by the allergy 1 or 2 drops 2 or 3 times a day. Never exceed the recommended doses.

A higher dosage of the product than indicated can give rise to severe systemic effects. The single-dose vial should not be reused because it does not contain preservatives while the multidose vial can be stored and reused.

For patients suffering from renal insufficiency and in the case of patients with hepatic insufficiency, there are no particular precautions to be taken. For any doubts about the drug and its dosage, it is advisable to consult your trusted doctor.

Overdose

Studies have been carried out for an overdose of Tetramil®. The medicine can cause toxic phenomena at high doses. Accidental ingestion can cause a reduction in the activity of the nervous system which can cause marked sedation and coma.

Do not take a double dose of medication to make up for a forgotten dose, as taking a double dose could increase the risk of overdose .

Can it be taken during pregnancy?

With regard to the possibility of using Tetramil® during pregnancy and breastfeeding, you need to ask your doctor’s opinion. The drug is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • For the multidose bottle: boric acid, sodium ethylmercurythiosalicylate, borax, sodium carboxymethylcellulose and water for injections;
  • For the single-dose container: boric acid, water for injections and borax;

The drug is contraindicated if the patient is allergic to nasal decongestant medicines, glaucoma and serious eye diseases. If the patient is taking drugs belonging to the class of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, he should take Tetramil® with caution.

The drug is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age. For any doubts about the drug and its possible contraindications, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Interaction with other drugs

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have taken or will be taking any other medicines together with Tetramil®. The drug can interact with medicines belonging to the class of monoamine oxidase inhibitors because it can cause an increase in blood pressure.
