Travelgum® Chewing Gum for Children: Price and Dosage

Travelgum® is a medicine produced and distributed in Italy by the pharmaceutical company Meda Pharma Spa which owes its action to dimenhydrinate, an active ingredient which is specifically indicated for the treatment of nausea and vomiting during travel by car, plane, train or ship.

How does it work?

Travelgum® is a medicine that belongs to the category of antihistamines that can also fight nausea. Dimenhydrinate , its active ingredient, has an antiemetic action or counteracts nausea and vomiting .

Travelgum® can be taken by adults and children over the age of 4 and is indicated for all cases in which it is necessary to counteract motion sickness: i.e. when traveling by car, train, plane or sea.

How is it assumed?

The dosage of Travelgum® requires adults to take 1 chewing gum up to a maximum of 4 throughout the day. In children aged between 4 and 12 years, 1 chewing gum should be administered up to a maximum of 2 gums per day.

The product should not be taken by children under 4 years of age and the child should take this medicine before starting the trip or as soon as the first signs of discomfort are noticed.

Travelgum® must not be swallowed as once it reaches the stomach it could increase nausea. The product begins to act 2-3 minutes after taking it and you have to keep chewing the gum for about 5-10 minutes. The beneficial effect of the product can last from 1 to 3 hours.

Patients suffering from renal insufficiency and patients suffering from hepatic insufficiency need not take any particular precautions, but it is always advisable to consult a doctor before taking any medication.

Overdose

There are no studies related to an overdose of Travelgum® , but if you take too much product you should consult your doctor. Strictly following the instructions on the drug significantly reduces the risk of side effects and the risk of unwanted effects . For any doubts about the drug and about a possible overdose, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Can it be taken during pregnancy?

The use of this product is not indicated during pregnancy and lactation even if there is no information on its possible toxicity and even if the systemic absorption is reduced.

Before taking this medicine it is advisable to ask the doctor’s opinion to weigh the real benefit that can arise from taking the drug.

Are there any contraindications?

The use of Travelgum® is contraindicated in the case of overt hypersensitivity to the active ingredient dimenhydrinate or to any of the excipients present in the drug.

In addition to those with allergies to the active ingredient or excipients, the drug is contraindicated in children under the age of 4, pregnant women and breastfeeding women.

Interaction with other drugs

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are (or if your child is taking), will take or have taken any medicines together with Travelgum® .

Travelgum® should not be taken if the subject is taking any of the medicines listed below:

  • hypnotics;
  • tranquilizers;
  • sedatives;
  • ototoxic antibiotics.

Travelgum® must not be taken with alcohol because it could interact with it, increasing the sedative effects and exposing the body to dangerous adverse reactions. If you have any questions about drug interactions, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Side effects

This medicine can cause side effects similar to other antihistamines. It could cause a sense of sedation and drowsiness. Your alertness while driving or operating machinery may be impaired. For this reason, if drowsiness appears, it is inadvisable to drive or work with machinery that requires considerable concentration.

The drug in its formula contains sucrose, glucose, sorbitol and aspartame and should be taken with caution if the doctor has diagnosed an intolerance to these types of sugars. The medicine contains aspartame, a common source of phenylalanine which can be harmful if the patient has phenylketonuria.

Store the product in a cool and dry place. The drug must be stored away from direct light and heat. Keep the product out of the reach of children. Do not use the product if the packaging appears damaged or tampered with or if the drug has changed in appearance.

The side effects associated with Travelgum® are:

  • drowsiness, headache, dizziness, erythema, tremors, trouble focusing, dry mouth, trouble passing urine, drop in blood pressure, increased heart rate, asthenia, weakness, insomnia.
