Wrinkle Filler: Opinions and Contraindications
The presence of wrinkles on the face is a problem that unfortunately afflicts many people and when these obnoxious signs of aging become more evident, they could also cause discomfort and shame. For this reason many of us are constantly looking for the perfect product to eliminate, or at least alleviate, wrinkles.
What Are Wrinkle Fillers ? How do these products work? Are they really effective for wrinkle treatment? Are there any risks or not? But above all, are there any particular contraindications for their use?
Today we will answer all these questions together in order to help you understand if such a treatment is right for you or not.
What are wrinkle fillers?
As we have already mentioned in the brief introduction of our article, in the cosmetic sector, when we talk about wrinkle fillers, we are referring to specific treatments to smooth out wrinkles and act deep into the tissues.
Specifically, these are substances that are injected directly into the dermis to improve not only wrinkles, but also other typical signs of aging, and sometimes they are also useful for treating the marks left by acne scars.
With the use of fillers it is also possible to improve the appearance of the cheekbones, or of the lips, for example if we want fuller lips or more evident cheekbones or if we want to act on the nasolabial folds .
Basically, fillers help us improve our appearance, making us visibly younger without the need to resort to the plastic surgeon’s scalpel. So let’s see in the course of our article how these products work and what the prices of the treatments are.
What are the most used types of wrinkle fillers?
When you have decided to undergo a treatment to alleviate the signs of aging, such as wrinkles, you will need to contact an expert in the sector, more precisely an expert in wrinkle fillers .
This professional figure who will surely have achieved a specialization in cosmetic surgery, will offer you different alternatives based on the results you want to achieve with this treatment.
Among the most used types of wrinkle fillers, first of all we mention collagen, a substance that is already found in our skin tissue but which, over time, physiologically tends to decrease and become less elastic.
Collagen is divided into two main types, especially based on its origin, namely:
- Collagen of human origin: it is made in the laboratory, starting from cultures of human fibroblasts which will then carry out the same functions as the collagen found in the body. On the market you can find two products based on collagen of human origin, one has been created for less accentuated wrinkles and another for the more evident signs of aging. The duration of treatment with this type of collagen can last up to 6 months;
- Collagen of bovine origin: it is extracted from the integument of carefully selected cattle. Like the previous one, also in this case there are two types on the market, one for finer wrinkles and one for deeper and more evident wrinkles. A substance is then added to this kind of collagen which allows us to obtain more lasting results, even up to a year.
However, if you want to achieve even more lasting results, we advise you to evaluate the possibility of undergoing treatments based on Poly-L-Lactic Acid, or PLLA.
It is an acid that is synthesized in the laboratory which, once injected into the deepest part of the dermis, is able to stimulate the production of new collagen by fibroblasts . This is why the first results will be noticed only a few weeks after the treatment.
PLLA-based sessions usually have to be separated by a period of about a month and, once the treatment is finished, it guarantees you results that can last even more than two years!
If, on the other hand, you wish to have more hydrated skin, you can consider the possibility of undergoing hyaluronic acid filler treatments , another substance which, like collagen, is already found in our bodies but which, over time, begins to run low.
What are the main benefits of wrinkle fillers?
As with most treatments to improve our appearance, even in the case of wrinkle fillers there are definite advantages and disadvantages.
Let’s start with the first ones. Among the most important advantages of wrinkle fillers we especially mention the following:
- Anesthesia is not mandatory, in fact you can decide whether to tolerate the stinging of the injection or not;
- If you don’t like the results obtained with hyaluronic acid treatments, know that it is a reversible treatment;
- They are quick procedures that are done in the clinic;
- The result you want to achieve with these treatments is hardly artificial, so it won’t upset your appearance;
- Before starting again with normal daily activities, the waiting time is minimal;
- They are quite cheap treatments.
What are the disadvantages though?
As for the possible disadvantages of wrinkle fillers, let’s look at the following points:
- In the event that you have decided to have microspheres injected and these give you problems, their removal will take place through a more invasive surgery than the same treatment;
- The sessions must be repeated at regular intervals to allow you to maintain the effect;
- Before having bovine-derived collagen injections, you must undergo allergy tests.
What are the prices of these treatments?
While wrinkle fillers are generally more affordable than actual cosmetic surgery, that doesn’t mean they’re cheap treatments.
The final cost of these procedures depends not only on the type of product that we will inject, but also on the quantity that will be used by the specialist for each session.
Regardless of these factors that will influence the cost of our wrinkle filler, we can say that, generally, the prices are those quoted below:
- The filling treatments based on hyaluronic acid and collagen have a cost that varies between 200 and 500 euros;
- The filler treatments based on poly-l-lactic acid have a cost ranging from about 350 euros to 700 euros.
Obviously these prices also vary according to the specialist you rely on, so we advise you to always get a quote to get a clearer and more precise idea about it.
Are there any contraindications for wrinkle fillers?
Before undergoing wrinkle filler treatments , the plastic surgeon will need to make sure that your body is suitable for the injections you will have to undergo.
It is, in fact, the injection of substances that may have very specific contraindications and among these we remember above all the following:
- If you are allergic to lidocaine, which is the most commonly used local anesthetic for these treatments, you will almost certainly not be able to undergo treatments of this type;
- These treatments cannot be done during the gestation period;
- These treatments cannot be done during the breastfeeding period;
- You cannot undergo wrinkle fillers if you are allergic to one of the active ingredients that are used for these treatments;
- If you are following a therapy based on NSAIDs or anticoagulants , you can’t do the wrinkle filler;
- Injections can aggravate conditions such as acne, the presence of rashes or cold sores;
- These treatments cannot be done in the case of patients suffering from autoimmune and connective tissue diseases;
- These treatments cannot be done in the case of people who tend to develop hypertrophic scars ;
- If you are on immunosuppressive therapy , wrinkle fillers are not recommended.
Finally, always based on the substance that will be used for the filler, there may be age limits. For all these reasons, before undergoing such a treatment, the specialist will have to analyze your situation and make sure that you do not fall into categories of people that are incompatible with this treatment.
Can side effects occur? Are there any risks?
The last topic we will talk about today concerns the possibility of experiencing side effects or specific risks after using the wrinkle filler.
First of all you have to keep in mind that, in any case, your skin will be subjected to injections, to which it will react in the following ways:
- a feeling of soreness;
- a redness where the injection was given;
- pain;
- some swelling;
- the formation of small bruises;
- the burning.
However, these are temporary symptoms that can generally be relieved with the help of cold compresses, avoiding touching the areas of the skin where these injections were made.
Furthermore, remember that, in the first 24 hours following the treatment, you must avoid taking alcoholic beverages and exposing yourself excessively to any type of radiation, whether solar or not.
Finally, if you notice the appearance of some side effects, such as bleeding, or the appearance of granulomas, or an infectious process, it is advisable to contact the specialist immediately to remedy the situation.
